A Big Step Forward: Tanzania’s First Pump Track Opens in Kahe
For a small organization like One Bike Tanzania, some moments feel bigger than others. The opening of Tanzania’s first-ever pump track in Kahe, Kilimanjaro is one of those moments.
Built in partnership with Pumpforpeace and Velosolutions, this project marks a historic milestone: the first pump track in the entire country. For the cycling community in Tanzania, it represents something new and exciting. For us at One Bike Tanzania, it represents years of persistence, belief, and steady work in the communities we care about.
From Small Beginnings
When One Bike Tanzania first started, the goal was simple: make bicycles more accessible and help people move more freely in rural communities.
In many villages across the Kilimanjaro region, transportation is still one of the biggest daily challenges. People walk long distances to reach school, markets, or health services. Over the years, our organization has focused on donating bicycles—especially to women and students—so that mobility becomes easier and opportunities become more reachable.
Kahe has been one of the communities closest to our work. For many years we have distributed bicycles here, working with families and students who rely on bikes as part of their everyday lives.
Because of that history, Kahe felt like the right place to take the next step.
More Than Transportation
In Tanzania, bicycles are often seen as a necessity. They are tools for transportation, used because other options are limited. But bicycles can also represent something else entirely—joy, sport, creativity, and community.
That idea has always been part of the vision behind One Bike Tanzania: not only helping people move, but also helping build a cycling culture.
The new pump track in Kahe brings that vision to life in a completely new way. For the first time, young riders in the area have a space designed purely for the fun of riding. A place where bicycles are not just practical, but exciting.
Seeing children ride around the track for the first time—laughing, challenging each other, and discovering the rhythm of the turns—is a powerful reminder of why projects like this matter.
A Huge Step for a Small Organization
For a small grassroots organization, building a project like this is a big step.
Most of our social work has always focused on simple, practical solutions: repairing bikes, distributing bicycles, and supporting mobility in rural communities. A professionally built pump track is something completely new for us.
Working with Pumpforpeace and Velosolutions, a global leader in pump track design and construction, allowed this idea to grow into something real. Their experience and support helped turn what once felt like a distant dream into a lasting piece of cycling infrastructure for Tanzania.
For our team, seeing the track completed is incredibly meaningful. It shows how far a small organization can go when a community believes in the same vision.
A Place for the Community
The pump track is designed to be open and welcoming for everyone.
Riders can bring their own bicycles and enjoy the flow of the track, but bikes will also be available for rental so that more people in the community can experience it—even if they don’t yet own a bike.
The vision for the space continues to grow. Plans are already in place to add a small coffee and drinks area nearby, creating a relaxed environment where parents, friends, and visitors can sit and watch the action on the track.
The goal is not only to build a place to ride, but a place where people gather, connect, and spend time together.
A Moment That Feels Like the Beginning
For cycling in Tanzania, the pump track in Kahe is a historic first. But for us at One Bike Tanzania, it also feels like the beginning of a new chapter.
After years of working to promote bicycles as tools for mobility and opportunity, this project shows another side of what cycling can bring to a community.
It can bring laughter. It can bring confidence to young riders. And it can create a space where people come together around something positive.
For a small organization that started with the simple idea that one bike can change a life, seeing Tanzania’s first pump track filled with riders is an incredible moment.
And hopefully, it is only the start of many more cycling spaces to come. 🚴♂️🌍
